What's Inside
“Day in and day out, it feels like we're juggling cotton balls in a blizzard.”
–Colonel Daniel Elzie, United States Marine Corpos Logistics Command
There may not be a single supply chain manager who’d disagree with Colonel Elzie’s words after considering the volatility of global supply chain risk mitigation during recent years.
Disruptions have become frequent as global supply chains face unprecedented risk and uncertainty. Whether environmental, geopolitical, regulatory, operational, or technological, supply chain risks now exceed traditional risk management techniques. When considering other factors, such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), international tensions, and significant climate events, it’s clear that supply chain professionals require a tool that can be utilized to evaluate, safeguard, and adapt to new approaches and strategies.
Conceived in 2010 and then published for the first time in 2014, the EPIC Index provides “the structure for assessing supply chain readiness in various regions around the globe from economic (E), political (P), infrastructural (I), and competence (C) perspectives.” Created and managed by the University of Tennessee Knoxville’s Global Supply Chain Institute, the index and subsequent report provide critical information about global supply chain risk and serve as tools for supply chain managers to identify strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats across different regions worldwide.
